In Sacred Leaf, the second of the Cocalero novels, 12-year-old Diego finds himself in the Bolivian jungle working the Ricardos, a family of cocaleros, or coca farmers. When the Bolivian army destroys the family's crops, Diego finds himself caught between wanting to support the farmers and wanting to go back to his family in Cochabamba. In the end, he finds a way to do both.
